Masala Zone on Parkway, Camden Town, is a glamorous, charming and fun Indian restaurant, offering a chic and interesting menu at very reasonable prices. Scroll down for their generous offer for iLPH readers.
I chose the special three-course Divali menu, priced at £24. To start, the Paneer Punjabi Samosas were sweet and spicy, cut through with tamarind chutney. The Thali to follow was a fascinating journey of flavour – I loved the Patiala Methi Chicken and the Dal Langarwall, although I was less keen on the Aloo Sarson ka Saag. The Baignan Kalonji – aubergine with mustard, ginger and onion seeds – had a great flavour but after a few mouthfuls I was overwhelmed by heat.
Mr iLPH chose Fish Amritsari, which was white fish in a crispy batter with a show-stopping mint chutney, delicious and unusual. He went on to the Chicken Mangalore, which was hot and delicious and everything a great curry should be.
We shared the Divali Dessert Platter of Kala Jamun, Rasgulla and Laddu with Mango Cream, which was sweet and colourful and prettily presented.
To drink, Mr iLPH went with the perfectly-chilled Kingfisher beer. I tried out the low-alcohol cocktails – my Hyderabad Highball was zesty and fresh, and the Lychee and Rose Fizz was like a liquid Turkish Delight.
iLPH had been invited to supper, but the staff had no idea we were there to review – crossed wires became clear at the very end of the meal – so the very attentive and rather sweet service and the lovely big table for just the two of us were completely genuine. I should say that I hadn’t warned the restaurant in advance of my egg allergy and they really were super-efficient in making sure my meal was egg-free and that I was confident in what I was eating, which is a huge plus for an allergy-sufferer.
