sunday roast lunch at the albert pub

Sundays call for iLPH to continue their arduous task of checking out the roasts around the Hill and pursuing and tasting the wine list. We last visited The Albert to taste the depth of the £4 a pint of bitter on a Monday and we chatted with the chef; so was eager to see how the roast measured up.

The Albert was at its best with great sunny tables outside and the spacious paved garden in the rear providing sun and shade. On a day like this it draws in the young families because the small kids can wander, stumble and waddle safely in the back. And the service is always friendly and accommodating.

The roasts hit the spot. Aged rib of beef and the carved leg of lamb sat resplendent on a lovely swede mash, roasties, parsnips and carrots. And enhanced by the horseradish and mint sauces. With a Leeds heritage I was looking forward to the Yorkshire pudding and was excited to discover we could buy extras at £1 a time – the best bargain in Primrose Hill! We also took a colourful and fresh salad and of course the just right cauliflower cheese.

We tend to take the wines at lunchtime, as we know the beers are good, and prefer to go a little off track. We enjoyed a great value Sicilian Rose, a red Rumanian and the house champagne. And they were worth the selection, not least for the exciting colours!

As you can tell all went smoothly and totally hit the mark! As the garden filled up with the happy chatter from groups of all ages and numbers, we could have dallied for the afternoon with desserts and more wine but work called! The Albert’s Sunday roast gets the thumbs up from iLPH!
