Lord’s cricket ground, the ‘home of cricket’, is world famous and deeply historic, but it is also our local ground and home to the local county team, Middlesex. Being members of Middlesex and fans of a sporting occasion, we targeted The Pelham restaurant at Lord’s for a matchday lunch – or ‘luncheon’ as it is known to the writer of this review…

Firstly, I am just going to come out and say it. Spoiler alert. The Pelham was outstanding. The food, the drink, the service and, my goodness, the tremendous view of the cricketing action. Being a county game we were able to secure the latest booking of the day for a leisurely late lunch following the cricketing action. In the summer the long window we sat alongside can also open almost completely, making it even more special.

The staff were super and gave just the right pace to the proceedings. Being a private members club the most enjoyable drinks were those selected by the club itself, so it was MCC champagne to start and club claret and port as we progressed.

In between courses the cricketers kept us well entertained. Everything was very good about the luncheon. The roast lamb and cheese board were highlights.

After the luncheon, as county members we were able to watch in the somewhat underpopulated MCC members pavilion. And we were able to have a champagne and a glass of beer as we sat in the front row almost in line with the wickets. I first came to Lord’s when Botham was still captain and I have never had a bad day here, even when rained out. It was a delight to be able to enjoy Pelham’s and to support Middlesex, where the management board is trying so hard and seem to be beginning to succeed. It is also a special and enjoyable privilige to be able to enjoy the historic pavilion, surely the most revered and fabled place in cricket.
