iLPH went to visit the 10 Days On The Hill exhibition at the Regents Park Gallery, featuring work by Ed Sumner, a professional contemporary artist for over 20 years. This vibrant pop up exhibition of luminous skies and bold local landscapes brings to mind how beautiful the local park landscapes are.
ABSTRACT DAWN

A key theme of this exhibition was creating luminous landscapes. It was the first time that Ed tried making the pink look pink with more grey, to make it more vibrant. This painting stood out strongly towards me because of how the evening orange sky as well as the dark blue sky and dark grey clouds create a scenic skyline. I have seen this skyline many times when the evening sets. The surface of the painting features a bright purple shade going over grass. Which of course is not natural unless the sun is setting in this way. In analysis, it was very insightful seeing how Ed created this painting through making the pink pinker with additional grey.
UNNAMED PAINTING

This unnamed painting stood out strongly towards me because of how the dark and light rose red coloured clouds are featured in the skyline. In this painting Ed was trying to get the clouds under-lit. It’s lighter at the bottom than the top. So the clouds are under lit. This continues the luminous skies theme because of the variety of different types of skylines featured in the exhibition. The bright blue sky grabs my attention because of how it enhances the rose red clouds, which creates a beautifully scenic sunrise.
PRIMROSE PRISM

Primrose Prism was the painting that stood out towards me the most in the exhibition partly because it was the largest painting. It’s all about the big sky. It’s trying to get people to look up more. It’s a good sort of window into the panorama through being bright and refreshing. The key reason why this painting stood out the most towards me was because it is a local landscape that I recognise. What is really special about this painting is how you can see the silhouettes of two of London’s most iconic buildings, the BT Tower and the London Eye. Anyone who visits Primrose Hill can relate to seeing this view from standing in that position.
Overall a brilliantly artistic time was had at the exhibition. It was amazing meeting Ed Sumner. It felt personally special getting to relate towards the familiar local landscapes on display. A lot of you may already be aware of Ed’s Big Skies Over London landscapes which are currently very popular. It was brilliant to see how artistically amazing Ed Sumner’s landscape paintings were.
