The first Primrose Hill Lecture Series event got off to an exciting start with an interestingly insightful conversation between Sara Wheeler and Simon Jenkins about Sara’s new biography called Jan Morris – An Extraordinary Life. Sara Wheeler is known as an English Travel author and biographer. Simon Jenkins is a journalist, historian and social commentator. Jan Morris was a Welsh historian, author and travel writer.
The talk focussed on Sara’s biography of Jan Morris. It is widely regarded as compassionate and comprehensive. Showing an incredible commitment to her research, Sara has even slept in Jan’s bed and spent many hours in her home. Simon Jenkins, whose book, A Short History Of America, has just come out on paper back, was a friend of Jan Morris, so there was a very strong and personal link, in evidence throughout the conversation.
Sara Wheeler:
Sara saw Jan Morris several times in London. Jan was a monumental presence within the society of our time. She covered the icon trial in Jerusalem. She went to JFK rallies. She was one of the best descriptive writers that ever lived. Born in 1926, a century ago this year and, interestingly, the same year as the late Queen Elizabeth II, as a young woman in the 1950s she was a correspondent for the Times and the Guardian in the Middle East. She interviewed the Senior Sheikh of Kuwait. Everything she wrote about the Middle East in Sara’s mind is highly relevant to our times.
Simon Jenkins:
Simon knew Jan quite well towards the end of her life. The first time Simon saw her was after an operation. Jan wasn’t ashamed of strongly drawing attention to herself. Simon regards her as being an extremely interesting person. Simon thought the key to Jan Morris is that ‘places are her people’. Jan wrote in her own book that she wasn’t very good with people; to her, places were far easier to understand and relate to.
