gommie AT THE ART OFFICE

The Art Office had an amazing evening hosting Gommie. Initially, Gommie worked as an actor but when Brexit happened he chose to become an artist. Everyone was able to look at his paintings which were spectacularly packed with a combination of poetry, visual art, and social commentary.

Above is a photo of the interior of the Art Office on the exhibition opening evening. Gommie did an amazing job explaining to everyone the meaning behind the messages that his art work were trying to give. He also said that he got into art after he left his job as an actor and started scribbling around in his notebook which created his interest for art.

This painting really stood out to me a lot because of the colour variety and shapes of the acrylic on the glass panel. The sentence that is written on the glass panel also stood out towards me well. This is memorable because it relates towards when earth was first created and when it shall end.

The evening ended theatrically with Gommie reading the Heyford Maps which details his experiences after his boat sank in Heyford. He ended the reading by saying: “With as much love towards you Heyford.” He then read the pieces from the Overshare series off the wall. Gommie said: “If any of these pieces relate towards you shout out wayyy after I have said them!”.

Gommie then asked the audience if they would like to hear some of his serious or funny poetry. Everyone said funny. He then read out Plastic Creature. He wrote the poem because he felt angry seeing a wide variety of litter in the river when going out on his boat or walking around the sides of it. The poem discusses how he mistakes Aldi bags, kebabs or Boris Bikes for animals in the rivers. He intends to make an environmental message through his poem about how littering in rivers and locks is a problem in society.

Visit the Gommie exhibition at the Art Office, 48 Chalcot Road, NW1 8LS, until 2 Oct 2024.
