Mark Charlton: Walking Through

The Art Office‘s newest exhibition features Mark Charlton, whose exhibition is titled Walking Through. The exhibition runs from 18 October – 15 November 2024.

Mark Charlton is located on the south coast of the UK. His art work is inspired by nature, science, the passage of time, as well as the interpretation that everything in the universe is interconnected. His ‘Walking Through’ exhibition is based around the themes of history, memory, emotion, and the reflectiveness from the experiences of life and ageing as we balance fluctuating moments. He said that we can interpret the different paintings from our own perspectives which would lead to us thinking about the various themes, based on how the paintings present themselves to the eye – and the mind – of the viewer.

One of his paintings that stood out the most for me was Next Week, 2024. He said that he would never say what the painting represented to him, but we discussed ideas that sprang out on the spot: that the painting could be of the Egyptian desert at night and the triangles are pyramids; or that whiteness was painted in as a snow storm which has made the moon become a dark pink colour, with the triangles representing trees. Initially when I looked at the painting I thought that it was of a forest going through a snow storm, which caused the moon to appear a dark pink colour. He told me that the different features in the painting can be of whatever your imagination wants it to be based on. For example, the triangles might be pyramids, trees or even tents. What is amazing about his work is that he gives the viewer the opportunity to become mesmerised through their own imagination. Going to his exhibition at the Art Office certainly made me feel like I was ‘Walking Through’ my imagination based on my everyday life experiences.
