Chalk Farm Bridge, also known as Regent’s Park Road Bridge, is a key feature of Primrose Hill. Crossing it is the commonest way of entering and leaving the area. The bridge’s closure to motor traffic in 1972 prevented Primrose Hill Village from becoming a rat run and reinforced the area’s identity as an enclave, sometimes known as The Island. The bridge and its link to Primrose Hill Village also explain many aspects of Primrose Hill’s history. Martin Sheppard, the main historian of Primrose Hill, will describe the impact of the railway on the area by focusing on the bridge (the third over the railway since 1838). He will also talk about the roads, stations and other buildings near to the bridge and the changes to them over time.
