ME TIME, PAINTINGS BY KRIS SOGUILON

iLPH went to visit the Me Time Exhibition at the Regent’s Park Gallery. The artist is Chris Soguilon who has done solo exhibitions in the Philippines and Singapore. This is the first time he has held an exhibition in the UK.

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

A vibrant painting depicting a barber shop scene, featuring a barber and a customer. The customer holds a smartphone, capturing a selfie of himself in the mirror. The interior is styled with red chairs, a television, and various barber tools, creating a lively atmosphere.

Kris said Digital Footprint shows how people take pictures before and after a haircut. What is unique about this painting is that we get to see how the man looked before and after he had his photo taken in the barbers. When the viewer is looking at the painting it’s up to them to decide whether the man took a video recording or photo of themselves before they had their haircut. We can also see hidden angles in the painting that weren’t made clear to the viewer. For example, how the barber holds the mirror so you can see the back of the man’s head. In analysis, this is clever because Kris has been able to reveal hidden details to the viewer.

THE PIANIST

A painting of a man playing a piano, sitting on a chair, wearing a red shirt and colorful shoes, set against a softly lit background with patterned tiles.

Kris told me that the Pianist is set at King’s Cross Station. As well as that there’s a random piano bar in the station. The person featured in the painting is emotional about playing the piano. Kris is trying to zoom in. Kris changed the setting from King’s Cross Station to a typical art studio setting. Which would give this painting a more distinctive setting. The man in the painting seems very absorbedly focussed on playing the piano. Therefore, this implies that he is lost in his music and not interested in anything that’s going on around him.

CLOSE UP:

A self-portrait of a person wearing a patterned robe, holding a mirror and applying makeup, with a vase of white flowers and a window in the background.

Kris painted Close Up as a picture of trying to capture someone privately and how intimate they are with the space. The painting features day to day habits that a woman would do privately with makeup. The woman looks very relaxed and composed whilst putting on her makeup, which creates a calm feeling for the viewer. The flowers featured in the painting creates a connection of nature towards the viewer. For example, how they would appear in an everyday life setting. Therefore, this helps the viewer to envisage this as being part of a private setting where everyday life happens.

Overall, a brilliantly artistic time was had at the exhibition. It was amazing meeting Kris Soguilon as well as his family. Kris has lived in the UK for more than two decades, which of course would have helped him spot the piano bar at Kings Cross Station and make a distinctive painting from it. It was amazing how we can use the Me Time exhibition to relate towards our own everyday life happening.
